Verbs 을/ㄹ 줄 알다/모르다 Mean in Korea expresses whether one knows how, or has the ability, to do something.
When the verb stem ends in a vowel or ㄹ, - ㄹ 줄 알다/모르다 is used, and when the verb stem ends in a consonant, -을 줄 알다/모르다 is used. It corresponds to ‘know how to/doesn’t know how to’ in English.
Example:
딸기잼을 만들 줄 알아요. I know how to make strawberry jam.
휴대전화로 사진을 보낼 줄 알아요. I know how to send pictures by mobile phone.
할 줄 몰라요. I don’t know how to do (it).
What is the difference between -을/ㄹ 줄 알다/모르다 and -을/ㄹ 수있다/없다.
-을/ㄹ 줄 알다/모르다 expresses whether one knows how or has the ability to do something.
나는 딸기잼을 만들 줄 몰라요 I don’t know how to make strawberry jam.
-을/ㄹ 수있다/없다 is used not only to express the ability to do something but also whether a situation permits something to be done.
나는 딸기잼을 만들 수 없어요.
It can mean:
(1) I don’t know how to make strawberry jam.
(2) I know how to make strawberry jam, but for some reason (such as a lack of strawberries,) I can’t make it right now.
